Recently someone asked me if I would be able to sew a kilt so it was the very right moment to know more about it.
I thought sharing my knew knowledge would be a good idea so here we go!

Je me suis également dit que partager ces connaissances récemment acquises serait une bonne idée

Sources don't say the same thing for the origin of kilts: some are ok with that the first ones were found in the Middle Age and others around XVII°,and were actually named "feileadh mor". They were made of meter and meters (yards and yards) of whool wraped around yourself withh the addition of a belt. Several inches of fabric were left free to put it over the shoulders in case a bad weather.
Les cources divergent concernant l'origine des premiers kilts: certains les places au Moyen-Âge et d'autre aux alentours du XVII° , il s'agissait de plusieurs mètres de laine dans lesquelles on s'enroulait, laissant un pan de libre que l'on remontait sur l'épaule les jours de froid. Ces kilts avaient pour nom "Feileadh mor".

 The "feileadh mor" changed during the XVI° (again: different sources) : say good bye to the scarf part and hello to "feileadh beg" (small kilt)
Ce type de kilt évolua pendant le XVI° (sources divergentes ici encore)où la partie se portant en écharpe disparue, et le nom passa à "feileadh beg" (aka petit kilt). 

The harder part in making them is to keep the pattern the same in the pleat than were it's flat. 
Le plus dur dans le plissage consiste à garde le motif du tartan


Every clan (familly) has his very own tartan pattern and you have to get the autorization to wear it from them (matter of honnor).
In Ireland they will be mostly green. While red and blue be rare over there, red would be a most-wanted color for Scottish tartan.
Chaque famille possède son propre motif de tartan, et si vous voulez porter un motif précis, vous devez d'abord vérifier qu'il n'appartient pas à l'une ou l'autre, et si c'est le cas demander l'autorisation de le porter. Ce qu'ils peuvent refuser, question d'honneur!
